 A

AFTERLIFE - A continued life or existence believed to follow death.

AGENT - (1) Person who attempts to communicate information to another in an ESP experiment. (2) The subject in a psychokinesis. (3) Person who is the focus of poltergeist activity.

ALCHEMY - The exploration and application of the sciences, particularly chemistry and the pseudo science of Astrology, such as they were understood in the middle ages and early Renaissance period. Alchemists were chiefly dedicated to the worthy pursuit of producing gold from baser metals and various materials.

ALIEN ABDUCTION - A form of kidnapping from aliens or extraterrestrials, where the individual is taken up to a spacecraft. Time and memory loss frequently and some people recall surgical investigations.

ALIENS - Beings from another world, also known as extraterrestrial beings.

ALTERED STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS (ASC) - A term used to refer to any state of consciousness that is different from the 'normal' states of waking or sleeping. ASC's include hypnosis, trance, ecstasy, psychedelic and meditative experience. ASC's do not necessarily have paranormal features.

AMULET - An object that is thought to bring good luck or have the power to protect from ghosts or spirits and ward of evil.

ANGEL - 'Messenger of God', a celestial being, benevolent in nature and if visible, appearing in human form, and possessing miraculous abilities such as teleportation, healing powers and knowledge of future events. There have been accounts of angels aiding people in times of crisis throughout the ages, albeit with no real consistency to their 'modus operandi'

ANOMALY - An anomaly is an irregular or unusual event which does not fit a standard rule or law.

APPARITION - A spectral image of a person that materializes even though a physical body is not present.

APPORT / ASPORT - An apport is a solid object that seemingly appears from nowhere in the presence of a medium. Asport is any object the 'spirits' or medium makes disappear or teleports to another location.

ASTRAL BODY - The body a person seems to occupy during an out of body experience.

ASTRAL PLANE - A place where all thoughts, memories, fantasies and dreams of everyone in the world exist. the astral plane is said to have many levels, and is said to operate at a higher frequency than the physical plane.

ASTRAL PROJECTION - The process where our ethereal body, spirit or mind separates from the physical body whilst maintaining a level of consciousness. See (OBE)

ASTROLOGY - A theory and practice which attempts to identify the ways in which astronomical events are correlated with events on Earth.

ATMOSPHERIC APPARITION - Also referred to as atmospheric imprinting, or Residual Haunts. When an event is so traumatic that it actually imprints onto the atmosphere and then replays over and over again. This is most commonly seen at battlefield sites. In the case where a ghost is seen on the anniversary of the event, the phenomenon is referred to as a recurring apparition.

AURA - Invisible to the naked eye, it is a glow surrounding each individual and changes colour and form depending on the mental and physical well being of the individual.

AUTOMATIC WRITING - This method of obtaining information from disembodied spirits is used by mediums in which the spirit takes control over the medium causing them to translate unconscious information on paper without being aware of the contents.

AUTOMATISM - An unconscious or involuntary muscular movement caused by spirits (see automatic writing)

AUTOSCOPY - Seeing one's 'double', or looking back at one's own body from a position outside the body (OBE). Also called a deadly double.

B

BALL LIGHTNING - A rare form of lightning in the shape of a glowing red ball that can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. Typically associated with thunderstorms, these spheres are thought to consist of ionized gas.

BANSHEES - Most often associated with Ireland and Scotland, the Banshee is an omen spirit that forewarns people of an impending tragedy.

BERMUDA TRIANGLE (THE 'DEVILS TRIANGLE') - A geographical area located off  the South Eastern Atlantic coast of the United States. This area has been subject to a number of unexplained losses of ships, boats and aircraft, including an entire squadron of TBM avengers.

BLUE CAP - A spirit who aided miners in Britain.

BOGEY (MAN) - A grim spectral figure who delights in menacing mortals with rather gruesome pranks and abductions. Although the lore of this character has degenerated into a familiar device used to threaten rambunctious children, the 'Bogey' was formerly soundly dreaded in Celtic regions, and was said to prowl the stretches of fields, marshes, and moors, looking for hikers and travelers who had strayed from their paths.

C

CALL - A call is the response that is made by a subject during a card guessing test or during any other type of ESP test.

CASE STUDY - An in-depth investigation of an individual subject.

CEREBRAL ANOXIA - Lack of oxygen to the brain, often causing sensory distortions and hallucinations. Sometimes used to explain features of the near death experience.

CHALCEDONY - A type of quartz used by the Egyptians to chase ghosts away.

CHANNELING - Describes the method in which mediums allow themselves to be used in order to manifest something which comes from outside themselves. For example, a healer is a channel for healing energy. Another form of channeling is trance medium ship during a trance, mediums can be aware of their surroundings and listen to instructions of a spirit guide and converse with other people whilst passing on messages, words of wisdom or inviting questions.

CHUPACABRA - Spanish for Goat sucker. In Puerto Rico, for twenty some years, numerous livestock and stray pets have been found with throats torn out, drained of blood and bearing mysterious puncture wounds. On the scene sightings of the creature supposed responsible are exceedingly rare, and descriptions always include 'glowing red eyes'. Locale and the absence of distinct tracks rule out either Wolverines or monitor lizards, both of which always drag off their prey. The most feasible suggestion is a Coyote or feral dog, but again, the behavior doesn't match. Whatever is the true culprit, Chupacabra has been become a popular sensation on the island.

CLAIRAUDIENCE - An auditory form of ESP paranormal information is received outside the range of normal perception through voices, whispers and auditory impressions.

CLAIRSENTIENCE - A general term for clairvoyance and clairaudience, Clairsentience typically occurs in the form of ESP through physical sensations or smells.

CLAIRVOYANCE - A subject of ESP. The viewing of distant scenes not apparent to the eye, may appear externally - either replacing the normal visual scene (visions) or being incorporated into it (as could be the case with apparitions) or internally, in the form of mental imagery and intuition.

COLLECTIVE APPARITION - An unusual type of 'ghost' sighting in which more than one person sees the same phenomenon.

CONTROL - In experimental parapsychology a procedure undertaken in order to ensure that the experiment is conducted in a standard fashion and so that results are not unduly influenced by extraneous factors.

CONTROL GROUP - A group of outside subjects whose performance or abilities are compared with the experimental subjects.

CORPSE LIGHTS - Phosphorescent lights seen floating about theair at night often thought to be warnings of death or the spirit of a wandering person.

CRISIS APPARITION - An apparition seen when the subject is at the point of death or is the victim of a serious illness.

CROP CIRCLES - Consists of a circle within which all corn stems are flattened but not broken, usually the outer ring of the circle has the corn flattened in the opposite direction to that of the center. Sometimes the circle may be surrounded by a series of smaller circles that maybe linked by channels.

CROSS CORRESPONDENCES - Interrelated bits of information received from 'the spirit world' by different mediums at different times and locations. The communications must be joined together to form a complete message from 'the spirit(s)'.

D

DAT - DECISION AUGMENTATION THEORY - An attempt to re conceptualize 'PK' as precognition-based selection process rather than one actual influence.

DEATH BED VISIONS - A dying person has an awareness of the presence of dead relatives or friends, these visitors are said to come and assist the dying with the transition from life to death.

DEATH CAR - A car that a person was killed in either by a wreck or any other mean, said to contain the residual energy released at death.

DECLINE EFFECT - A decrease in performance on a PSI test when the test is repeated.

DEJA VU - The feeling of having experienced something before. Often more intense in the event of a head injury.

DEMATERIALIZE - This word is used to describe a spirit or specter meaning to deprive of or lose apparent physical substance or in similar terms without flesh.

DEMONS - Hostile and resentful entity, supposedly of non-human origin, which some believe to be 'fallen (from grace) angels'.

DEPORT - Movement of an object from a secure and enclosed place.

DICE TEST - An experimental test in which a subject attempts to influence the fall of dice. This study is used for the investigation of psychokinesis.

DIRECT VOICE PHENOMENON (DVP) - A 'spirit' voice, spoken directly to sitters at a seance. The sound usually seems to come from a point near the medium, or through a spirit horn or trumpet, but not from the mouth of the medium.

DISPLACEMENT - Responses on PSI test that correspond systematically to targets other than the intended one (those before or after)

DISSOCIATION - Activity performed outside of normal conscious awareness, or mental process that suggest the existence of separate centers of consciousness.

DMILS - DIRECT MENTAL INTERACTION with LIVING SYSTEMS - Used to denote instances where one person is attempting to influence a distant biological system, usually the physiology of another person. As it is unclear whether this represents an influence (PK), a case of ESP on the part of the influence, or an opportunistic selection process (see DAT), the term 'interaction' has been adopted.

DOPPELGANGER - An exact spirit double or mirror image of a person which is considered to be very negative.

DOWN THROUGH TECHNIQUE (DT) - An experimental test for clairvoyance in which the person guesses the order of a stacked series of target symbols (cards) from top to bottom. (opposite of up through technique).

E

EARTHBOUND - A term referring to a ghost or spirit that was unable to cross over to the other side at the time of death and is therefore stuck on Earth.

ECTO / ECTOPLASM - (1) A lifelike substance solid or vaporous that exudes from a medium's body and can become limbs or other ghostly manifestations. (2) Smokey like substance associated with spirit manifestations.

ELECTRO KINESIS - The generation of electricity from the mind that can be used to charge watches and batteries.

ELECTRO MAGNETIC FIELD (E.M.F.) - A field of force associated with electric charge in motion.

ELECTRONIC VOICE PHENOMENA (EVP) - Disembodied voices that are captured on recording devices, not heard at the time of recording.

ELEMENTALS - In magical tradition and ceremony, spirits which govern the four corners of the Earth and are associated with, or reside within, thefour basic elements. They are called Sylphs (the east, air), Salamanders (the south, fire), Undines (the west, water), and Gnomes (the north Earth).

EXTRASENSORY PERCEPTION (ESP) - The ability to gain knowledge through means other than the five physical seances or logical inference.

EXORCISM - Ceremonial expulsion of invading spiritual / demonic entities from a person or dwelling, present in virtually every worldly culture. The Jewish and Catholic Christian faiths each have a formal 'Rite of Exorcism' to be conducted by the respective Rabbi or Priest.

F

FALSE AWAKENING - An experience in which a person believes he or she has woken up, but is actually still dreaming.

FEAR CAGE - This can occur when there are high EMF readings due to electrical equipment or conduits in an enclosed room: This can cause Nausea, paranoia, hallucinations and feelings of uneasy.

GHOST - A generic term referring to a form of apparition or supernatural entity which is typically the visual appearance of a deceased human's Spirit.

GHOST HUNTING / INVESTIGATING - A ghost hunt is an informal attempt to simply sight or record a 'ghost' in a location similar to others known to be haunted. A ghost investigation, on the other hand, is a carefully controlled research project, set up to record paranormal activity, usually at a location known, or presumed to be haunted.

GHOST SICKNESS - A belief that a ghost can cause physical illness by a number of means including touch and PK ability.

GHOUL - A demonic or parasitic entity that feeds upon human remains.

GRAY LADIES - Ghosts of women said to have died in the sake of love.

H

HALLOWEEN - A holiday based on the Celtic all hallows eve, rumored to be the day the dead can rise again.

HALLUCINATION - The perception of sights and sounds that are not actually present.

HAUNTING - Reoccurring ghostly phenomena that returns to a location where no one is physically present. Ghosts generally haunt places and not people.

HELL HOUND / BLACK SHUCK - A spectral death omen in the form of a ghostly dog.

HOT READING - A devious or fraudulent reading in which the reader has been given prior knowledge of the sitter.

HYPNOSIS - A technique that includes a sleep like state in which the subject acts only on external suggestion.

I

ILLUSION - A distorted perception of objects or events causing a discrepancy between what is perceived and what is reality. (Sometimes confused with hallucination)

INTERPENETRATION OF MATTER - A term described in a situation where a 'Poltergeist' will dematerialize a solid object, then make it re-appear in a completely different place.

J

JAMES RANDI - Possibly the ultimate definition of skepticism.

K

KARMA - A law in Hinduism maintaining that every act no matter how insignificant will eventually return to the doer, good with good and evil with evil, if not in this life then in the next.

L

LAYING ON OF HANDS - A process by which certain healers profess to be able to heal patients by touch.

LEVITATION - The lifting of physical objects by Psychokinesis (PK).

LEY LINES - Alignments of ancient sites, these are considered to be Earth's natural energy lines and also that spirits may use these lines as a way of traveling quickly from one place to another. It has also been suggested that where two Ley Lines cross there is a possible chance of a portal opening to other dimensions.

LIFE REVIEW - Flashback memories of the whole person's life, often associated with the Near Death Experience or (NDE).

LUCID DREAMING - A dream state in which one is conscious enough to recognize that one is in the dream state and is able to control dream events.

M

MALEVOLENT - Malevolent spirit is a way to describe a malicious supernatural force that causes harmful acts to living beings.

MATERIALIZATION - The act of forming something solid from the air. One of the most difficult and impressive materialization's are when part or all of a ghost or spirit can be seen, especially if the face is recognizable.

MEDIUM  (direct Voice) - A trance medium who apparently acts as a transmitter for the voices of disembodied spirits.

                 (materialization) - A medium who seems to be able to give physical form to the deceased from a substance called 'Ectoplasm'.

                 (Physical) - A medium who is the centre of moving objects and other physical incidents supposedly caused by spirits

MIST - A photographed anomaly (not seen at the time of photo) that appears as a 'blanket' of light. Theory suggests that this is the appearance of a 'ghost' or 'spirit' of the dead. As with other photographed anomalies there is environmental issues that are of concern to the validity of their existence (moisture, reflection, dirty lenses etc.). There has been no substantial proof that these are, or are related in any way, to 'ghosts' or paranormal behavior.

MOVING COFFINS - A disturbing occurrence when coffins sealed within a tomb move on their own accord without outside interference.

N

NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE (NDE) - An experience that is reported by people who clinically die, or come close to actual death and are revived. These events often include encounters with spirit guides, seeing dead relatives or friends, life review, out-of-body experiences (OBE), or a moment decision where they are able to decide or are told to turn back.

NECROMANCY / NECROMANCER - A form of prophecy, in which the seer or sorcerer / sorceress raises the 'spirit' (not corporal remains) of the dead in order to have the wraith foretell future events. It was thought that upon entering eternity, the 'spirit' would have full knowledge of past, present and future.

O

ORB - A photographed anomaly that theoretically represents the 'spirit' of a deceased person. It will appear as a ball of light on film though in some cases they are not seen at the time of the photo. Since there are many reasonable circumstances (dust, snow, insects, reflection, lens flare, etc.) Orbs still remain a highly controversial subject.

OUT OF BODY EXPERIENCE (OBE) - A sensation or experience in which ones self or spirit travels to a different location than their physical body (see Astral Projection).

P

PARANORMAL - Referring to something that is beyond the range of normal human experience or scientific explanation.

PARAPSYCHOLOGY - The branch of science that studies psychic phenomena. (term coined by J.B. Rhine)

PERCIPIENT - A person who sees (i.e. perceives) an apparition or ghost.

PHANTOM - Something that is seen, heard, or sensed, but has no physical reality (see ghost).

PHANTOM HITCHHIKER - A ghost that wanders highways and gets rides but when the car is stopped the ghost is gone.

PHENOMENOLOGY - An approach to research that aims to describe and clarify a person's own experience and understanding of an event or phenomenon.

PLACE MEMORY - Information about past events that are apparently stored in the physical environment.

POLTERGEIST - German for 'noisy ghost'. This is an extremely rare occurrence wherein random objects are moved and sounds produced gy an unseen force, The sole purpose of which seems to be to draw attention to itself. The phenomenon always involves a specific individual, frequently a child or adolescent.

POSSESSION - Invasion of the human mind by a spiritual or demonic entity, where the invading agent for a span of time, influences or entirely subverts the personality of the human host. It is in these instances that the boundaries of psychology, religion and spiritualism are rendered less distinct.

PRECOGNITION - The ability to predict or have knowledge of something in advance of its occurrence, especially by extra sensory perception (see clairvoyance).

PSYCHIC VAMPIRE - This is a term for individuals who seem to instinctively draw and absorb the psychic energies from others, usually while conversing with (or at) them.

PSI - A letter in the Greek alphabet that denotes psychic phenomena.

PSYCHE - The Greek word for 'self', 'mind', or 'soul'.

PSYCHIC - A person who is responsive to psychic forces with above average ESP abilities.

PSYCHICAL RESEARCH - Term coined in the late 19th century to refer to the scientific study of the paranormal. Now largely superseded by 'Parapsychology'.

PSYCHOKINESIS (PK) - The power of the mind to affect matter without physical contact, especially in inanimate and remote objects by the exercise of psychic powers.

                               (Bio) - Psychokinetic influence of biological systems e.g. changing the physiological activity of a living system (see DMILS).

                               (Deliberate) - Psychokinesis that occurs as a result of conscious effort by the person causing it.

                               (Macro) - The effect of Psychokinesis on objects in general.

                               (Micro) - The effect of psychokinesis on random events such as random event generators (REG's).

                               (Spontaneous) - Psychokinesis that occurs without conscious effort by the person who causes it.

                               (Time-displaced) - The concept of psychokinesis going backward in time to affect events that have already taken place.

PSYCHOMETRY - ESP of events associated with inanimate objects.

PYROKINESIS - The unconscious ability of one to control and in some rare cases produce fire with their mind only.

Q

QUALITATIVE METHOD - A research method involving the collection of non-qualitative data (e.g. observations, interviews, subjective reports, case studies).

R

RADIANT CHILD - The apparition of a child which is seen glowing or surrounded by a bright aura.

RADIO VOICE PHENOMENON (RVP) - Receiving the voice of a deceased human being through a regular radio.

RECIPROCAL APPARITION - An extremely rare type of spirit phenomenon in which both the agent and percipient are able to see and respond to each other.

REINCARNATION - The belief that the spirit or the soul of a person can be reborn to a new life, some people are able to remember past life personalities and experiences. This is a non-Christian belief, but many Eastern cultures have always included reincarnation in their philosophy.

REM's - Rapid eye movement during sleep that indicates dreaming. Repressed Psychokinetic energy - A theoretical psychic force produced, usually unconsciously, by an individual undergoing physical or mental trauma. When released, the power causes paranormal occurrences such as poltergeist activity.

RESIDUAL HAUNTING - Psychic imprint of a scene which is repeatedly played out, where the witness of such phenomenon essentially is peering into the past. The ghostly participants of these time-displacements often seem unaware of their living observers.

RETROACTIVE PSYCHOKINESIS - Paranormal influence that an agent can have on an experiment after it has been completed.

RETRO COGNITION - The psychic perception of past events or conditions.

RECURRENT SPONTANEOUS PSYCHOKINESIS (RSPK) - A possible cause of apparent poltergeist activity.

REVENANT - An entity which projects an appearance of being distressed or misplaced.

RUNE - An archaic character inscribed upon a stone or clay tablet, signifying some virtue or property, as with the Norse Runes, and used for divination and as a talisman.

S

SCRYING - A term used to cover a wide range of divination techniques which parapsychology would tend to classify as types of ESP. Most scrying techniques involve some degree of fixation on a surface with a clear optical depth (crystal ball, a pool of ink or deep water) or on an area which shows random patterns (flames in a fire, smoke), the idea being that subconscious information available to the scrying will be manifested in their interpretation of the imagery or random patterns they see.

SEANCE - A meeting or gathering of people, usually lead by a medium to receive spiritualistic messages, manifestations or communication with the dead.

SENSITIVE - Someone who can sense a paranormal presence.

SHADE - An entity resembling a once-living being (human or animal).

SHAMAN - A member of certain tribal societies who acts as a medium between the visible world and an invisible spirit world and who practices magic or sorcery for purposes of healing, divination, and control over nature.

SIMULCRA - This is a word used to describe the seeing of faces, figures and images in ordinary, everyday objects such as rocks, foliage, etc.

SCEPTIC - A person inclined to discount the reality of the paranormal and to be critical of parapsychological research. Generally seeks rational or scientific explanations for the phenomenon studied by parapsychologists.

SPECTRE - A ghostly apparition; a phantom (see ghost).

SPIRIT PHOTOGRAPHY - A spirit photograph captures the image of a ghost on film. Many of these are supposedly intended as a mere portrait of a living human being, but when the film is developed, an ethereal ghostly face or figure can be seen hovering near the subject. This may also incorporate orbs, vortexes, and mists to some degree.

SPIRIT / SOUL - In the complete word finder Spirit is described as 'The vital animating essence of a person, or animal, the intelligent being without a body'. Soul is described as 'The immaterial part of a human being, often regarded as immortal, vital, spirit or force, being, inner self'.

SPIRITUALISM - A belief system that 'spirits' of the dead can (and do) communicate with living humans in the material world. (Usually through an intermediary known as a medium).

SPRITE - A soul, spirit or apparition.

STIGMATA - Unexplained bodily marks, sores, or sensations of pain corresponding in location to the crucifixion wounds of Christ.

SUBJECTIVE APPARITION - Hallucinations of apparitions or other phenomena that are created by our own minds.

SUPERNATURAL - Something that exists or occurs through some means other than any known force in nature. As opposed to Paranormal, the term 'supernatural' often connotes divine or demonic intervention.

T

TABLE TURNING - Movements that come from the table used during a seance, these are suggested as being a form of communication from the spirit world.

TAROT CARDS - A set of (usually 72) cards that include 22 cards representing virtues and vices, death and fortune etc. used by fortune tellers to help predict future events.

TELEKINESIS - The paranormal movement of objects by scientifically inexplicable means.

TELEPATHY - The ability to transfer one persons thoughts to another, this is not considered as supernatural phenomenon, many experiments into this area started enthusiastically around 1882 with the beginning of the Society for Psychical Research. In 1903 Zenner cards were developed by K.E. Zenner and American Psychologist, these cards are widely used in ESP research with varying results.

TELEPORTATION - A kind of paranormal transportation in which an object is moved from one distinct location to another, often through a solid object such as a wall.

TEMPORAL LOBE ACTIVITY - Electrical activity in the temporal lobes of the brain. Often associated with strange sensations, time distortions and hallucinations. Sometimes used as an explanation for seeing paranormal experiences such as apparitions.

THRIXOTROPY - This is a property that is exhibited by certain gels. A thrixopic gel maintains its shape and appears solid, but if it is subjected to certain forms of disturbance, such as shaking, it will start to flow like liquid. Possible explanation for bleeding statues etc.

THOUGHT FORM - An apparition produced solely by the power of the human mind.

TRANCE - A hypnotic, cataleptic, or ecstatic state in which one becomes detached from their physical surroundings.

U

UFO - Unidentified Flying Objects, considered to be alien aircraft. It is interesting to note that a large majority of UFO's are sighted during or after an electrical storm.

UFOLOGY - The study of Unidentified Flying Objects.

V

VAMPIRES - Mythical creatures who rise up out of their graves at night and feed off the blood of others.

VERIDICAL DREAM - A dream that relates to actual events of either the past, present or future, that the dreamer is unaware of.

VORTEX - An anomaly that appears as a funnel or rope-like image in photographs. These images are sometimes thought to represent ghosts, collections of orbs or gateways which travel to a wormhole in time-space. There has been no substantial scientific evidence to support any of these theories.

W

WARLOCK - The masculine name for a witch, wizard or magician.

WEREWOLF - Mythical creatures that change from humans to wolves. These creatures can only be killed with a silver bullet and the plant wolfs bane is said to act as a deterrent.

WHITE NOISE - An acoustical or electrical noise of which the intensity is the same at all frequencies within a given band.

WICCA - Witchcraft as a recognized religion, the practitioners of which refer to their system as, 'The Old Way' and 'The Ancient Religion'. Wiccans in their rituals align themselves with elementals and the Earth's natural magnetic fields, personified by the names of ancient Greek, Egyptian and Sumerian deities.

WITCH - Broadly, a practitioner of the magic arts, spec. a woman who employs charms, herbs and incantations to effect the workings of her will. Also, a practitioner of the Wicca craft.

WIZARD - A male sorcerer and conjurer who is especially adept and experienced in his craft.

WRAITH - Apparition said to be the bringer of death.

X

XENOGLOSSY - The alleged writing or speaking in a language that is unknown to the individual speaking or writing it.

Y

YETI / BIGFOOT - An ape like creature most often sighted in the U.S. but also around the globe since the mid 19th Century. It has been suggested that Bigfoot exists in another dimension and travels to this one via either, astral projection or through portals, the latter has also been suggested for the Lochness monster.

ZENER CARDS - Set of 25 cards (5 each of circle, square, Greek cross, five-pointed star, three wavy lines) designed by the perceptual psychologist Karl Zener for use in card-guessing tests of ESP. (also known as ESP cards).
